Why Leroy Sané is just as important to Bayern Munich as Harry Kane

Leroy Sané has started this season in tremendous form. Having already equalled his record goal tally in the Bundesliga after nine matchdays, the 27-year-old has undoubtedly caught the eye of many sides across Europe, with recent reports linking the forward to Liverpool.

A record of eight goals and two assists has placed Sané behind summer signing Harry Kane as Bayern Munich’s most dangerous attacking threat so far this season. However, this has not always been the case for Sané, who has struggled for consistency since joining Die Rekordmeister from Manchester City in 2020.

Nevertheless, head coach Thomas Tuchel has suggested that the reason for Sané’s fine form is due to the forward finally finding a place in the side: “He can bring his full potential onto the pitch when he feels comfortable, when he is calm, and when the principles are clear. For us, this is clearly when he plays on the left or right wing.”

It is no surprise that the 27-year-old has been able to finally find his feet in Bavaria after receiving an extended run of games. Sané has started every game for Bayern in the Bundesliga and Champions League, which is something that Tuchel would note is very crucial: “I think it’s very important for Leroy that he plays a lot and keeps playing.”

This season, Sané’s performances have helped galvanise Bayern when the record champions seemed to be wilting away. Due to a thin squad, fatigue is bound to set in, and this was displayed against Galatasaray in the Champions League.

However, Tuchel would admit that this is where Sané excels, as he is “physically a machine,” and this helps him “implement our instructions like no one else.” Therefore, it is no surprise that the Bayern board are looking to extend his deal, which is set to expire in 2025, as without him this season, it could have looked much worse for Die Rekordmeister.
