Why Lautaro Martinez goal in Inter-Salernitana should be disallowed

Lautaro Martinez’s goal in this evening’s 4-0 Inter win over Salernitana could’ve been disallowed, but the VAR protocol prevented an intervention.

There was never any doubt about who would emerge with the three points, as the hosts were 3-0 up at the break at San Siro.

However, it has been pointed out that the second goal – scored by Lautaro Martinez – should not have stood.

It was an unusual goal, as the assist was provided by a long Carlos Augusto throw-in.

Viewing the footage, it looks as if Carlos Augusto had one foot on the pitch when he took the throw-in, so that was a foul throw and should’ve been turned over to Salernitana instead.

VAR could well have spotted the infraction, but due to the limitations of the protocol, were not allowed to intervene to disallow the goal.

There are very few situations where VAR can intervene, including whether the ball has gone out of play in the build-up to a goal, but not when it comes to throw-ins.
