Why José Mourinho is already a failure at Tottenham

When you sacrifice style for results, what happens when there are no results?

It’s a conundrum that everyone at Tottenham should be mulling over and one that the club chairman, Daniel Levy, must have at the very forefront of his mind.

Levy sacked Spurs’ most impressive and most popular coach for nearly half a century in November to try win that illusive trophy but, right now, silverware looks further away than ever.

Their scoreless draw at Watford last weekend was the latest in an already lengthy list of bad performances and inadequate results.

The buck has to stop with José Mourinho.

It took all of a month for the Portuguese tactician to get back to his old ways, blaming a lack of quality in the squad, calling for new recruits and deflecting all blame from himself.

The home defeat to Chelsea, in which an inexperienced side came to north London and dished out a thoroughly convincing 2-1 win, was the turning point for him.

That the manager in the opposition dugout was Frank Lampard made it all the more sickening, or sweet, depending on your perspective.

Since then, Mourinho has used his media conferences to unleash a barrage of complaints against what he is having to deal with and trying to dampen the Spurs fans expectations – his modus operandi.

After nearly six years of sunshine under Mauricio Pochettino, Mourinho is bringing the grey skies to the Tottenham Stadium. How long will it be before star players want some vitamin D in their lives?

It has always been Mourinho’s way to get a solid, structured base and then allow attacking players to do what they want in the final third but that is not working for the former Special One right now.

They’ve conceded 21 goals in his 15 games so far and have already lost more games at home during his first two months in charge than Mourinho did in his entire first spell at Chelsea.

But it’s not just in defence that Tottenham have failed to ignite.

In attack they are also struggling to find their rhythm and so far this year are one of only three English Football League teams to not score a goal, alongside Bristol Rovers and Bournemouth.

Mourinho, in his brief period at the club, has failed to get a tune for a group of world-class stars and his castigating of Tanguy Ndombele, for being injured, looked eerily reminiscent of his bullying of Luke Shaw at Manchester United.

Once again, he looks out of touch with the modern game.

The argument from the Mourinho disciples is that he’s a natural born winner who does whatever it takes to get his club over the line but isn’t that thinking from a bygone age?

In an era where Jürgen Klopp is considered the best in class, doesn’t Mourinho’s postering and dirty tricks look old fashioned and nasty?

It was a huge call to get rid of Pochettino but every club has the right to fire coaches as they wish. That’s the modern game and managers take jobs knowing that their head is on the line should results falter.

But if the wins do not start racking up soon, Levy should wondering what on earth he was doing getting rid of the Argentine and hiring the Poisoned One.
