It’s always interesting to see who wins the WhoScored man of the match award.
The equivalent prizes, when given out by journalists or pundits, are always coloured by the narrative of the game and preceding events. But the WhoScored version goes purely on the stats of the game.
Jorginho got their star against Newcastle, with a 7.6 rating. Of course he made the second best individual contribution of the game after Kai Havertz’s supreme touch and goal – the pass leading up to it.
Italy international Jorginho is a fair recipient in the circumstances, Mason Mount wasn’t great, nor were Hakim Ziyech or Timo Werner. Havertz was quiet apart from the goal, and the back 4 didn’t have much to do.
Jorginho is so important in games like this against strong and confident sides, keeping the ball and organising the team’s shape – and eventually being on hand to play the perfect pass to win the game.
