Thierry Henry feels that Inter were left short changed from their 3-3 draw against Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night, as he feels that they would have had a massive advantage going into the second leg next week had the away goals rule still been in play.

“How can you score three goals away from home and not have an advantage,” the former Juventus, Arsenal and Barcelona star asked.

Inter, who had lost three games in a row heading into their Champions League semi-final, managed to put three past Barcelona in Montjuic thanks to Marcus Thuram and a Denzel Dumfries brace, but were pegged back by Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres and a Raphinha strike that went down as a Yann Sommer own goal.

Henry feels Inter were unlucky against Barcelona

On punditry duty with CBS Sport on Wednesday night, Henry claimed that Inter were hard done by given that there is no longer an away goals rule in play.

The away goals rule was scrapped from UEFA competitions in August 2021, but Henry feels that Inter deserved more of a reward after scoring thee away from home against Barcelona.

“I know it’s been like that for a very long time and we have to accept it, but off air, I was talking to Jamie (Carragher), and I’m like ‘how can you score three goals away from home and you don’t have an advantage?’

“Away goals, for me, were massive because you score three goals away and you don’t have an advantage, still 0-0 at home …

“But, like I said, I didn’t think Inter was going to perform how they did just because of how they played recently. You have to give them a lot of credit for matching what Barcelona gave them and coming strong in the game. I have to be honest, I didn’t expect that.”
