Thomas Tuchel declared in his press conference today that Danis Zakaria had travelled with the squad to Zagreb.

This got plenty of fans excited – but why exactly? The midfield has been let go on loan by Juventus, who had him for 6 months and didn’t like what they saw. He arrived hours before the transfer deadline, as what felt like the fourth choice for midfield just out of the players considered that day, let alone over the whole summer.

Part of it is just the natural way that fans love new signings. But in Zakaria’s case there is a real belief that a good player in that position can improve us with N’Golo Kante out.

We’ve all seen so many times how much better we play with the Frenchman in the team. If we can just find one other player to approximate that, there’s a real sense that the rest of this underperforming group will look a lot better.
