Chelsea have lost Levi Colwill for the season and have Wesley Fofana as one of their other key central defensive options.
That is not a great position to be in, and all summer they’ve been linked with other defenders, starting with Dean Huijsen before he made his Real Madrid move and going from there.
In the end the Blues haven’t signed anyone at centre back, and it doesn’t look like they’re going to. Right now, one of the targets they’ve been linked to many times is pushing for an exit, and the Blues are nowhere to be seen.
Arsenal and Tottenham chase Piero Hincapie but Chelsea aren’t interested.
Piero Hincapie is a player who has attention from all over Europe, and he’s now pushing to leave Bayer Leverkusen. Florian Plettenberg claims that he has a €60m release clause, and could be available for less.
Arsenal and Tottenham meanwhile are both being strongly linked with moves for the Leverkusen player. “Hincapié is keen on Arsenal, while Tottenham are also in the race,” Plettenberg writes.
So why do we think Chelsea aren’t keen on snapping up a potentially elite defender for a reasonable price? Some online are speculating that it’s show of faith in the development of Mamadou Sarr.
The central defender was signed from our sister club Strasbourg and trained with the first team at the Club World Cup, where he also made a brief debut, before returning to Ligue 1 on loan for the season.
There he’s made a really bright start, as Liam Rosenior’s team pick up where they left off last season. They’ve won both of their games and have yet to concede a goal. Sarr looks great already and will only get better.
