Why Bayern Munich's Bundesliga dominance isn't their fault

Bayern Munich don’t look as perfect as they have in recent years but their dominance in the Bundesliga is growing at an alarming rate.

The German champions have now been top of the Bundesliga for 100 days and their lead is up to 18 points after the weekend.

It is the biggest lead any team has had after 21 games in Bundesliga history.

What’s worse is, the growing gap isn’t due to Bayern’s growing dominance. Their 53-point tally is “only” their sixth best ever at this stage of a season and fewer points than they had after 21 games in 2013, 2014, and 2016.

The more concerning problem for the Bundesliga’s supposed challengers is how badly they have dropped off.

Currently on 35 points, Bayer Leverkusen are the worst team in second-placed side in the Bundesliga at this stage for 24 years.

In the previous 23 seasons, only three teams have been second with fewer than 40 points from 21 games.

The awful form of Borussia Dortmund since September, the flatlining of TSG Hoffenheim, and the inconsistencies of RB Leipzig and Schalke has resulted in an interesting race for European football and the Champions League places in particular.

Bayern’s dominance – this year’s title will be their sixth in a row – is bad for the league but their performances this season strongly suggest they aren’t the dominant force they were under Pep Guardiola.

Just two years ago, Borussia Dortmund finished the season as the best runners-up in the history of German football. Their 78 points would have been enough to win the title in 46 of 54 Bundesliga seasons ever.

Though Bayern are beatable now, nobody in Germany is capable of matching them.

It’s a deeply concerning trend and one Dortmund, Leverkusen, Schalke, and Leipzig will have to reverse sooner rather than later before the league descends into farce.
