Why Bayern Munich overlooked Vincent Kompany’s relegation with Burnley

When Bayern Munich announced that Vincent Kompany would be the head coach to succeed Thomas Tuchel, there was concern amongst fans of Der Rekordmeister that the club had potentially made the wrong choice.

Having performed admirably in Belgium with Anderlecht, as well as guiding Burnley back to the Premier League in a dominating first season at Turf Moor in the Championship, there was great expectation placed upon the former Manchester City defender as he took to management in England’s top flight.

As well as this, despite having many interested parties in his signature, Kompany elected to remain at Turf Moor.

However, a disastrous campaign in the Premier League ultimately ended with Burnley back in the Championship, but this time without Kompany at the helm.

Bayern saw an opportunity to hire the 38-year-old, whom they believed had the potential to succeed in the Bundesliga, and thus far, they are being proved right with two wins in their opening two games.

Speaking to Sport Bild (via @iMiaSanMia) upon the decision to appoint Kompany after guiding Burnley to relegation, Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen commented:

“We shouldn’t reduce Vincent Kompany to last season in England. Before that, he achieved promotion more than comfortably with an incredible 101 points and an outstanding goal difference through his active and aggressive football. Vincent is a versatile coach; he played at the highest level in an absolute top team like Manchester City and learnt as captain under Pep Guardiola.”

“Our players, who play at the highest level themselves, respect that. Vincent brings something that is good for our players: he gives them energy, knows exactly what is important, and even gives some of them a hug when things aren’t working out.”

Der Rekordmeister head into the international break in fine form, and while certain aspects of their game still need to be ironed out, Kompany has proven his ability to win games in Germany, but will the Belgian be successful?
