An insight into the decision of Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick to push for the summer signing of Dani Olmo has on Thursday been provided.

The info comes courtesy of Diario Sport, and points towards Raphinha’s presence in his squad as key.

The two leading names linked with a move to Barcelona throughout the summer were of course midfielder Olmo, and Athletic Club standout Nico Williams.

When all was said and done, it was the former who made his way to Catalunya’s capital, enjoying a fine start to life back in Blaugrana colours before being struck down by a recent injury.

Many behind the scenes at the Camp Nou are understood to have actually considered Nico as the priority, though, with Joan Laporta in particular having been desperate to land the Euro 2024 winner.

In the mind of Hansi Flick, however, Olmo was always first-choice.

As per a report from Sport:

‘In the summer, Flick bet on the signing of Olmo over Williams. One of the main reasons for this was that he saw in Raphinha a player capable of providing everything he wanted from a winger.’

Barcelona’s boss, in turn, pushed for reinforcements through the middle, a decision which, if the form of Raphinha and Olmo alike this season is anything to go by, proved the correct one.
