Gary O’Driscoll, a pivotal figure in Arsenal’s medical department, is set to make a significant career shift. Here’s why he’s trading Arsenal for Manchester United.

In a move that has taken many by surprise, Gary O’Driscoll, Arsenal’s head of medical services since 2009, is set to join Manchester United.

O’Driscoll’s departure represents the end of a successful tenure at Arsenal, where he’s been an essential part of the club for over a decade.

His long-standing relationship with the club was previously tested in 2020 when Liverpool showed interest, but O’Driscoll chose to stay loyal to the Gunners.

So, why the sudden change?

While he was not actively seeking to leave, the Manchester United offer was too good to refuse. A key motivator behind this decision is the opportunity to move closer to his family, adding a personal dimension to the professional switch.

Manchester United’s vacancy in the medical department arose after Steve McNally left in December 2022. They eyed O’Driscoll as their preferred choice, as reported by David Ornstein a few months back, and they got their man.

Back at Arsenal, the departure leaves a void. O’Driscoll had strong ties, particularly with manager Mikel Arteta, who had convinced him to stay during previous transfer temptations.

As the North London club begins its search for a new head of medicine, Mark Gillett, the Premier League’s chief medical officer, is among the potential candidates. Gillett also has considerable experience in English football, with stints at Chelsea and West Brom.

This transition is not the only change at Arsenal. The club has also recently seen the exit of Steve Round, assistant manager to Mikel Arteta.

While the exact future remains uncertain for Arsenal’s medical department, one thing is clear: O’Driscoll’s move to Manchester United marks the end of an era for the Gunners and the start of a new chapter for him.

O’Driscoll will start with Manchester United on Monday, 18 September.
