Why Alex Telles kisses the ball before set-pieces

Manchester United left-back Alex Telles has explained why he kisses the football before taking set-pieces.

It’s something you may have noticed on television – and I’m sure it would have been brought up before had fans been able to attend matches to see Telles up close.

That has made me think about how difficult it’s been for new arrivals to settle in Manchester – or anywhere, with restricts in place across Europe since last year.

I don’t know their living conditions – whether all of our new signings have moved into homes or they’re living in apartments, but I’m sure not being able to get around the city and meet new people have been difficult.

But many fans have noticed Telles’ unusual routine this season.

He was asked about it during an exclusive interview with the club’s official website.

Telles told ManUtd.com: “I believe very much in positive vibes and positive energy.

“So, before I take a set-piece, I kiss the ball to pass on that positive energy. My faith is very important to me too, which is also why I do this.

“Before the match, I also make sure to ask for God’s blessing so I can perform well and to ask for protection during the game.

“But in terms of positive energy, I speak to the ball as well.

“I ask it to go in the right place, like the top corner!”

Telles is expected to start tonight’s Europa League quarter-final against Granada at Old Trafford, with Luke Shaw suspended for the tie after getting booked in the first leg.
