“Who’s Joey Veerman” – Lundstram confession changes everything

John Lundstram threw in a fun curveball today after confirming he isn’t a box-to-box midfielder at all, but is in back a deep-lying playmaker, a number 6, and had played that his whole career until he joined Sheffield United and adapted into a more attacking version for the Premier League.

The big midfielder, in such excellent form the past month or two, has really begun to settle into Rangers engine room, showing just why Steven Gerrard was so keen to get this lucrative Bosman, but a big clue on his success lately is that he’s played in the 6 or ‘Barry Ferguson’ role.

Indeed, his lesser form when the season began took place when he was more advanced, with Steven Davis taking up the 6 slot, and since the rotation begun and Lundstram retreated into a less advanced slot, the big man has looked exceptional.

Turns out that isn’t a surprise at all.

he said:

“I’ve played number six, the deep hold, most of my career. It’s only the last couple of seasons in the Premier League I’ve played more attacking, with my energy, it suited my game in the Prem with the faster paces but before then I had always seen myself as a deep-lying midfielder.”

This is very intriguing a confession, and shows that JL might actually be the midfield orchestrator we’ve sought as opposed to shelling out £10M for Heerenveen’s Joey Veerman.

He’s been excellent there for Rangers over September and October and long may it continue.
