Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a big rebuilding job on his hands this summer.
Speaking after Sunday’s embarrassing defeat at Everton on Sunday, Solskjaer said: “I’m going to be successful here and there are players there that won’t be part of that successful team, but there are many of them that do have it.”
But which players should he keep, and whose time at Old Trafford is up? Here’s our advice …
David de Gea
It’s been a season to forget for United’s Spanish shot-stopper and with his current contract set to expire in June 2020, there have been suggestions the club should try and cash-in this summer. But could they really hope to replace him with a better goalkeeper at this moment in time? We’re highly sceptical.
Our verdict: Keep
Sergio Romero
They will do well to find a better back-up goalkeeper than this guy, too.
Our verdict: Keep
Lee Grant
The 36-year-old is still under contract until June 2020 and is therefore unlikely to leave this summer.
Our verdict: Keep
Victor Lindelöf
He’s one of the only good defenders United have at the moment and should be considered a cornerstone of next season’s team.
Our verdict: Keep
Eric Bailly
The 25-year-old has so far made just 11 Premier League appearances this season, but he looked decent in his first campaign at the club and is probably just about worth persisting with for a little while longer.
Our verdict: Keep
Phil Jones
He’s long overstayed his welcome at the club now, hasn’t he? For everyone’s sake, get rid.
Our verdict: Sell
Chris Smalling
He’s not good enough to be a starter at a club of United’s calibre but given he signed a new three-year contract in December, he probably won’t be leaving this summer. And if he does stay, he wouldn’t be the worst squad player in the world.
Our verdict: Keep
Marcos Rojo
He’s been mediocre throughout his time at the club and a recent report suggested his team-mates are constantly worried he might injure them in training. Bye bye.
Our verdict: Sell
Ashley Young
A solid professional but the fact he recently captained United in a Champions League semi-final is symbolic of how the squad has been left to rot in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. It’s time to go.
Our verdict: Sell
Diogo Dalot
Arguably one of the best signings United have made in recent years, but that’s not really saying much. Definitely one for the future.
Our verdict: Keep
Luke Shaw
Started the season strongly but then injuries took their toll. We could be saying that about Shaw for the rest of his career, but United would be silly to offload him at this point.
Our verdict: Keep
Antonio Valencia
Has so far made just one first-team appearance in 2019 and pretty much confirmed via Instagram recently that his decade at Old Trafford will soon be coming to an end.
Our verdict: Sell
Matteo Darmian
We honestly thought he’d already left.
Our verdict: Sell
Paul Pogba
Well, isn’t this the million dollar question? There have been many questions asked about Pogba’s attitude both while José Mourinho was at the club and since Mourinho has left. If the Frenchman genuinely is a disruptive influence in the dressing room then he should be sold, but there is always the risk that he could blossom into the player he has the potential to be at another club and United will have missed out on a once-in-a-lifetime midfielder.
Our verdict: Keep
Juan Mata
He wouldn’t be a bad player to keep around but his time as a genuinely quality player has probably been and gone.
Our verdict: Sell
Jesse Lingard
It hasn’t been the best season for the England midfielder but he’s still part of the fabric of the club and a useful player to have in the squad.
Our verdict: Keep
Andreas Pereira
Still looks like he could be a good player in the future but he’s 23 now and the 2019/20 season will make or break him at United.
Our verdict: Keep
Fred
It’s been a hugely disappointing debut season for the £50m man but he looked promising at Shakhtar Donetsk and deserves a second chance.
Our verdict: Keep
Ander Herrera
Looks like the Spaniard has already decided to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer but we honestly can’t see United missing him that much.
Our verdict: Sell
Nemanja Matić
The Serbian was particularly dreadful in the defeat at Everton and admitted as much himself after the game. United really need to try and sign a more mobile upgrade in defensive midfield this summer.
Our verdict: Sell
Scott McTominay
He’s been one of the club’s better players in recent weeks and could have a really bright future ahead of him.
Our verdict: Keep
Alexis Sánchez
The Chilean’s move to Old Trafford has been an unmitigated disaster and United have to try and cut their losses this summer. Offloading a player on his astronomical salary could be easier said than done, however.
Our verdict: Sell
Romelu Lukaku
If United are going to sign a new striker this summer, they should probably get rid of one and if you ask us, Lukaku should be the most obvious choice. His time at Old Trafford hasn’t been bad, but it hasn’t been particularly good either.
Our verdict: Sell
Marcus Rashford
The academy graduate will probably be allowed to stay at United for as long as wants and he might be the only player in the squad at the moment who the fans would genuinely hate to see leave.
Our verdict: Keep
Anthony Martial
He was woeful against Everton and still hasn’t properly made the grade at United but with some proper coaching over the next couple of years, he could still become a world-class forward.
Our verdict: Keep
So, to recap …
Sell: Jones, Rojo, Young, Valencia, Darmian, Mata, Herrera, Matić, Sánchez, Lukaku
Keep: De Gea, Romero, Grant, Lindelöf, Bailly, Smalling, Dalot, Shaw, Pogba, Lingard, Pereira, Fred, McTominay, Rashford, Martial
