Lazio have completed the signing of Matteo Cancellieri from Hellas Verona, giving Maurizio Sarri a talented forward to work with.

The 20-year-old Italian forward joined the Roman club in a deal worth around €7 million plus €1.5 million in add-ons; the Biancocelesti overtook the interested Sassuolo, finally giving the Lazio fans something to smile about in the transfer window.

However, many fans are now left asking, who is Cancellieri and what will he bring to Rome? Born and raised in the south of Rome, he joined the Roma youth system at the age of 16, where he immediately made a strong impression. He scored 19 goals in 19 appearances for the Under-17 squad, quickly being promoted to the Primavera squad.

In the summer of 2020, the Italian forward was involved in the deal that saw Marash Kumbulla move to Roma, so he became part of the Hellas Verona squad. The move was made permanent for €2.5 million a year later after he shined for the Primavera squad, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists in 18 games.

An exciting prospect, be sure to place a soccer bet on how many goals he will score this season ahead of the start of the 2022-23 campaign!

Cancellieri’s great debut year in Veneto saw him quickly promoted to Igor Tudor’s first team and he was given his first taste of Serie A in the season just gone, netting one goal in 12 league appearances. Despite the limited minutes, he earned a call-up to Roberto Mancini’s Italy squad and he made his debut in a Nations League match against Germany earlier this month.

Sadly, the 20-year-old Italian forward is also linked to the Lazio world through a shared tragedy; Cancellieri was close friends with Daniel Guerini, the talented Biancocelesti youngster who sadly passed away last year after a car crash.

The incident had a serious impact on the talented prospect, who took a few quiet days to mourn before posting a tribute to his friend on Instagram, which read: “The world has fallen apart on me. You were like a brother to me. Maybe there would be too many things to say but I prefer to keep them to ourselves.”

Cancellieri is an incredibly versatile player who can play as a right wing-back, a right-winger and a centre-forward. He stands at 1.80m tall and has good core strength, making him hard to jostle off the ball. Despite being left-footed, Cancellieri most often controls the ball with his right, preferring to receive possession with his body facing the goal.

Interestingly, the 20-year-old Italian forward seems to share Arjen Robben’s penchant for cutting inside from the right-wing to take a shot. He’s a skilled and hard-working player who seems like the perfect addition to Sarri’s squad in Rome.
