According to numerous reports, including transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are on the verge of signing central defender Benoit Badiashile.
The AS Monaco ace has long been on the radar of many of Europe’s top clubs, and it seems the Blues may be about to get there man. While the deal has not yet been confirmed by either club, Romano has already given the deal his “Here We Go” stamp of approval.
Although Chelsea signed Marc Cucurella, Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana during the summer transfer window, Todd Boehly appears eager to give Graham Potter more defensive reinforcements given the side’s struggles so far this Premier League campaign.
The centre-back is still just 21 years old, having made his debut for Monaco in 2018 at the age of 17. His birthday is on March 26th.
Badiashile is, quite frankly, a colossus. As per Transfermarkt, he stands at 6 ft 4 in, which would make him Chelsea’s tallest defender should he make the move to Stamford Bridge. At the moment, Trevoh Chalobah towers over his defensive teammates at 6 ft 3 in.
Badiashile was thrown into professional football at the deep end – his first match came against Paris Saint-Germain, with Monaco losing 4-0, while his third outing came in the Champions League in a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.
He has been an important part of the Monaco side ever since, and has even featured for the French national team, picking up two Les Bleus caps so far.
Badiashile’s FIFA rating currently stands at 77. While there are several other centre-backs above him in the Ligue 1 rankings, he is rated as Monaco’s third-best defender.
He does not possess electric pace, with a rating of 61, but he has over 70 in terms of short and long passing and, unsurprisingly, physicality.
Before a player is pictured holding up the shirt of his new club, anything can happen in the world of football, so there is no watertight guarantee that Badiashile will be a member of the Chelsea squad by the end of January.
However, Romano’s sources are as good as any, and if he says all parties have agreed a deal, then you can expect an announcement to come through soon. The London outfit are believed to be paying €38m (£33.4m) plus add-ons for Badiashile, who will reportedly sign a contract until 2029.
