The majority of Southgate’s squad looks settled but there are some positions where new stars may get their chance to show what they can do on the international stage.

Here are some of the contenders fighting for a place in Southgate’s plans.

Brentford striker Toney has scored 16 Premier League goals in 24 appearances so far season, only four less than Harry Kane. He is in fine form remains available for selection despite the 262 charges made against him for breaching the Football Association’s gambling rules.

Aston Villa forward Watkins is another player pushing to get into the England squad with his goalscoring form. He has scored in seven of his last eight Premier League games.

Left out of Southgate’s World Cup squad, Sancho has returned from injury for his club and has four Premier League goals this season. He also helped United win the Carabao Cup, their first silverware since 2017.

Brighton’s March has competed for England’s youth teams but he has never won a cap for the senior side. He is on Southgate’s radar with his consistent performances for the Seagulls.

Tomori was excellent as his AC Milan side knocked Tottenham out of the Champions League, in what was a statement display from the defender. His form could see him add to his three England caps.

Rico Lewis
