Harry Maguire may well have just extended Erik ten Hag’s tenure beyond the forthcoming international break.

Realistically, though, that shouldn’t be the case. It’s time to pull the curtains on the Dutchman’s time at Old Trafford, and even if it does happen in the coming weeks, it’s around four months overdue.

Manchester United took an early two-goal lead at the Estadio do Dragao this evening thanks to Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund, the latter of which scored his first of the season in his first start.

Yet, in true United fashion, they were torn apart by the relentless FC Porto attackers and proceeded to concede two quickfire goals to squander their advantage. Just five minutes after the interval, Samu Omoridion completed his brace and gave the hosts a deserved lead.

It looked almost certain that the Reds would be leaving Portugal with nothing from their second Europa League tie. However, Harry Maguire’s late heroics off the bench claimed a crucial point for Ten Hag, albeit confirming a fourth winless outing in a row.

Defensive duo deemed ‘awful’ after conceding three

Sharing his immediate reaction to the night’s affairs on X/Twitter, The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell said: “Rescue act from Maguire means MUFC escape with a draw. [Christian] Eriksen’s corners have been good this season. But a chaotic display that leaves more concerns.

“Awful night from [Lisandro] Martinez + [Matthijs] de Ligt – Ten Hag’s choices. [Bruno] Fernandes’ high foot [was] just irresponsible.”
