Manchester United fans are doing their utmost to stay optimistic in the build-up to the Europa League final on May 21. Performances like yesterday’s aren’t making matters any easier.

The Red Devils slumping to 16th place in the Premier League table while arch-rivals Liverpool are still reeling off the highs of equalling United’s record 20 league titles is just a testament to how catastrophically low the standards have fallen at Old Trafford.

On Sunday, United were hit for two by the visiting Irons without registering even one goal in response. To make matters worse, Ruben Amorim had deployed his strongest starting XI for the first time in a few domestic matches. They still couldn’t get the job done.

United sustain 17th league defeat – 13th under Amorim

Of course, the players’ minds are already in Bilbao. They’re likely still replaying the highs of their emphatic quarter-final and semi-final victories in the Europa League, while also envisioning themselves lifting the trophy while simultaneously securing Champions League football for 2025/2026.

For the United faithful, the prospect of stomaching such a calamitous league season without reigning victorious in the final this month is unthinkable.

When the afternoon’s affairs in M16 were all wrapped up, The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell took to X/Twitter to react, writing: “Disastrous occasion for United. A 17th loss of the season, -11 goal difference, 16th place. Five defeats, two draws in the last seven. A sixth team to do the league double over them.

“[Leny] Yoro injured, [Rasmus] Hojlund missing chances, [Manuel] Ugarte losing the ball, [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka bossing it.”

Wan-Bissaka, who joined the London outfit for a reported £15 million last August, earned himself a Sofascore rating of 7.5 for his efforts across the 90 minutes he played.

The former Red assisted Jarrod Bowen for West Ham’s second of the contest as well as completing three successful dribbles, two key passes, making two clearances and one interception.
