Ellen White is just one goal short of Kelly Smith’s record for England after the forward netted the only goal for the Lionesses in a 1-0 victory over Austria at The Stadium of Light in Sunderland this afternoon.

White scored from close range in the first half as Sarina Wiegman’s side made it five wins out of five in FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 qualifying in blustery and icy conditions in the North East.

It was a difficult start for both sides on Wearside with the gusty conditions proving challenging. England attempted to keep the ball on the deck and some bright link-up play between Fran Kirby and Beth Mead provided some hope that the Lionesses would be able to construct some tidy attacking play.

Millie Bright saw a shot on goal deflected but Laura Wienroither was there to hack the ball to safety before Lauren Hemp drove an effort straight at visiting keeper Manuela Zinsberger. White then got herself on the end of a low delivery but Zinsberger was again able to claim.

The forward made the breakthrough soon after. Hemp’s low cross caused problems for the Austrian defence and while Kirby saw her initial shot blocked, her second effort fell into the path of White who directed the ball home from a couple of yards.

England could have been 2-0 up at the break if not for Zinsberger. The Austrian keeper first pushed a Kirby effort away before blocking White’s follow up.

Austria came out stronger for the second half and England keeper Mary Earps had to make two excellent saves to deny Sarah Zadrazil and Maria Plattner.

Barbara Dunst was next to test the England keeper before Mead was denied by club teammate Zinsberger at the other end.

Rachel Daly saw a low effort pushed round the post by Zinsberger late on as the Lionesses were made to make do with a 1-0 win.

England are back in action on Tuesday evening when they face Latvia at The Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster.
