Manchester City saw off West Ham United on the final day of the 2023/24 Premier League season to seal an unprecedented fourth consecutive league title.

Fresh off an iconic 2022/23 campaign, the defending treble winners became the first club in Premier League history to win the crown four years on the trot.

Despite bowing out of the Champions League, the Cityzens confirmed their domestic supremacy on the back of a superb 23-game unbeaten league streak to leave runners-up Arsenal two points behind.

In doing so, Pep Guardiola has broken the tie with the legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who inspired the Red Devils to three successive Premier League titles on two occasions.

Guardiola has helped Man City join a select club of only five clubs across Europe’s top-five leagues to have won the championship four or more times on the bounce.

Let’s look at other teams boasting this incredible feat.

Barcelona

One of the most decorated coaches in world football was at the heart of Johan Cruyff’s revolution at Barcelona, which forever changed the game’s landscape.

Back to Camp Nou in a managerial role, the late Dutchman was a unique visionary whose innovative approach and philosophy continue to influence football to this day.

Cruyff might have assembled the ‘Dream Team,’ featuring stars like Romario, Hristo Stoichkov and Michael Laudrup, but what he did with that team was a turning point in football history.

Barcelona won La Liga four times on the spin between 1990 and 1994 as the world first witnessed a new style of play, broadly known as ‘tiki-taka,’ which Guardiola later improved to perfection.

Real Madrid

What Cruyff did with Barcelona was impressive, if not revolutionary, yet it wasn’t entirely unprecedented in La Liga.

His Blaugrana side ended Real Madrid’s five-year reign of dominance in Spain’s top flight between 1985 and 1990 – a feat still standing the test of time.

As the most successful club in Spanish football, Los Blancos are used to breaking records for fun, and stringing such a mesmerising run wasn’t out of character for them.

Back in the day when Alfredo Di Stefano ruled La Liga with his magnificence, the Santiago Bernabeu outfit racked up five straight league titles between 1960 and 1965, setting a record unheard of in the country.

Juventus

Precisely three decades before Di Stefano’s Madrid brought La Liga to its knees, record-time Italian champions Juventus did the same in Serie A.

Between 1930 and 1935, the 36-time Serie A winners had no match in the league before their crosstown rivals Torino fell one title short of equalling that record from 1945-49.

Juventus’ tremendous streak in the early days of Serie A would go on to be a benchmark for Italian clubs for almost a century before the Bianconeri outdid themselves in the 2010s.

From 2011 to 2020, the Turin heavyweights ruled Italian football with unparalleled dominance en route to becoming the first side to win nine consecutive titles in Europe’s top-five divisions.

Inter Milan

Just four years before they embarked on their domestic rampage, Juventus were stranded in Serie B due to an infamous match-fixing scandal.

From the ashes of ‘Calciopoli’, one side emerged as the new supreme force in Italian football.

Coached by Roberto Mancini, Inter Milan took advantage of Juventus’ relegation and AC Milan’s point deduction, aggravated by a financial crisis, to assert their dominance in Serie A.

The Nerazzurri became the first Italian side since Juve in the 30s to string together five consecutive top-flight titles, holding the reins between 2005 and 2010.

Bayern Munich

Juventus’ astonishing achievement was supposed to set a new standard for European football before Bayern Munich pushed the boundaries even further.

The two runs coincided, with the Bavarians launching their 11-year tenure in the Bundesliga in 2012 before Xabi Alonso’s invincible Bayer Leverkusen side knocked them down from the throne in 2023.

Despite being dethroned in epic fashion, the Allianz Arena powerhouse left an indelible mark on world football, cementing their legacy as one of the most formidable clubs to have graced the game.
