In the modern game, the status of a football club is often measured by the size of its fanbase.
Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has often been known the cite the Old Trafford outfit’s enormous social media following as evidence that the club is still the biggest in England, despite their recent trophy-drought.
However, Woodward and many other people might be surprised to learn that social media followers aren’t always the most reliable metric of popularity.
Livefootballtickets.com have run the Twitter handles of every Premier League club through a tool called SparkToro, which can tell how many of their followers are real and how many are fake.
A ‘fake’ follower is defined as an account which is either spam, a bot, propaganda or no longer active on Twitter.
And here, in ascending order, are the results of that test …
20. Wolverhampton Wanderers – Approximately 27.9 per cent of their followers on Twitter are fake
