Which clubs have spent the most in one transfer window? Transfer fees appear to be on a never-ending upwards trend with football’s biggest clubs splashing the cash again this summer
Liverpool have now invested around €300m (£260m), including add-ons, on players this summer and the Premier League champions are not done yet. With interest in signing a centre-back, alongside a potential British record deal for Alexander Isak, it could be a record-breaking window for the Reds.
Chelsea are not far behind and are working on deals for Jorell Hato and Xavi Simons. The Blues feature as we rank the highest spends in a single transfer window.
Chelsea set a winter window record after splashing out €330m on new arrivals in January 2023. The club’s new owners, BlueCo, broke the bank to bring in eight players.
Their signings included the £88.5m arrival of Mykhailo Mudryk and a British transfer record capture of Enzo Fernandez. The latter joined from Benfica in a £106.8m deal after being named the Best Young Player at the Qatar World Cup.
Real Madrid invested heavily in the summer of 2019, after losing their grip on the Champions League and La Liga.
The marquee addition was Eden Hazard, who arrived from Chelsea but endured a difficult spell in Spain.
Elsewhere, Luka Jovic also proved a costly mistake, while big fees were spent to sign Ferland Mendy and Eder Militao.
Paris Saint-Germain enter this list at number three. The Parisians brought in a whopping 10 players who each cost in excess of €20m during the 2023 summer window.
The most expensive purchases were a mixed bag, with Randal Kolo Muani (€80m) and Manuel Ugarte (€60m) soon moved on.
Ousmane Dembele proved a far better success, with the Frenchman the Ballon d’Or favourite after a sublime second season in Paris.
The Saudi Pro League has become a major player in the transfer market and Al-Hilal broke the bank in 2023.
Neymar was the marquee recruit after joining from Paris Saint-Germain, with the €90m fee making the Brazilian the most expensive footballer of all time in cumulative fees.
The forward was already the most expensive footballer ever in a single transfer, after signing for PSG for €222m in 2017.
Other additions included Aleksandar Mitrović, Ruben Neves, Sergej Milinković-Savić, Malcom and Kalidou Koulibaly. The recruitment drive worked, as Al-Hilal won the title undefeated.
Chelsea, incredibly, feature twice on this list in the same year. Fresh from their record-breaking winter window investment months earlier, the Blues spent a record €446m in 2023.
For the second time in six months the club broke the British transfer record, signing Moises Caicedo from Brighton. Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Axel Disasi and Christopher Nkunku also all arrived through the door for a combined sum of around €186m.
