In the January 2018 transfer window, Manchester City added a Swedish international to their ranks when attacking midfielder Julia Spetsmark joined the club from KIF Örebro.

After representing Mallbackens IF, QBIK, Sunnanå SK and KIF Örebro in her homeland, Spetsmark’s move to The Academy Stadium presented her with the chance to play her football overseas for the very first time.

Spetsmark joined a Manchester City side who had won all three domestic trophies and had set their sights upon European glory in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. The player’s overseas challenge arguably came at a time when it was the most difficult to break into the Manchester City team and nail down a place.

As things turned out, Spetsmark made just three appearances for Manchester City in the Barclays Women’s Super League. Her only start came against Chelsea in a thrilling 2-2 draw at The Academy Stadium. The Swede left The Cityzens at the end of that season after just six months in England.

Upon her Manchester City exit, Spetsmark returned home to Sweden where she joined Djurgårdens IF. The player made a significant contribution to her new club’s attacking game.

In 2019, the midfielder m0ved to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) where she won the Championship and the NWSL Shield with North Carolina Courage before enjoying a short spell with Benfica where she lifted the Portuguese League Cup. A move to French side FC Fleury 91 followed before Spetsmark joined Cypriot club Apollon Limassol. The player hung up her boots at the end of last season, bringing the curtain down on a 16-year senior playing career.

Spetsmark will not be viewed as one of the all-time great Swedish footballers, however, her contribution to the game both at home and abroad was significant and the player enjoyed a successful career.
