England have had some huge heartaches in major competitions in recent years. They came painfully close to reaching the World Cup final in Russia, 2018 – falling at the last hurdle in the semi-final as they crashed out against Croatia.

They then went even closer in EURO 2020, as they reached the final and even went 1 – 0 up thanks to a Luke Shaw strike early on, but the Italians fought back and eventually defeated Gareth Southgate‘s men on penalties at Wembley.

Now a new competition awaits in 2022, with the World Cup in Qatar and England will be desperate to go all the way in this one and bring football home.

England last won the World Cup in 1966.

The Three Lions defeated harsh rivals West Germany, fittingly at Wembley Stadium to lift the famous trophy.

The match was a fantastic affair. The initial 90 minutes concluded at 2 – 2 before extra-time saw Alf Ramsay’s side kick-on to score two more, courtesy of Sir Geoff Hurst, and bring football home in front of England’s adoring fans.

Bobby Moore was handed the trophy by The Queen in front of 98,600 England fans.

England have only ever won one World Cup.

That’s right – since 1966 England has failed to win the tournament ever since. The closest they have come was in the last tournament in 2018, where they, unfortunately, crashed out in the semi-finals thanks to a Luka Modric-inspired Croatia side.
