Noel Whelan claims Leeds United have the ability to pull off the signing of Maxwel Cornet if Marcelo Bielsa gives the green light.

The former Whites hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to a reported update in Leeds’ hunt for the defender.

On June 13th, transfer expert Alan Nixon claimed Leeds have asked Lyon how much it will cost to sigh Cornet.

Nixon claims Cornet will cost £20million and labelled him a “top talent”.

Cornet, 24, made 36 Ligue 1 appearances for Lyon last season.

He played mainly as a left-back but was also utilised on the left and right wing on some occasions.

He bagged two goals and picked up five assists in total as his side finished fourth in the league.

Whelan admits Cornet sounds like he would fit in at Leeds and claimed a £20million transfer is realistic.

“When Bielsa goes into the transfer market, the players have to tick every single box,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He won’t just go into the market to find a name. They need to be able to do the hard work off the ball.

“He likes to make sure these guys are versatile, like Stuart Dallas. £20million is in that ballpark Leeds will be looking at for the next Dallas.

“We don’t know what’s happening with Alioski so we need to keep an eye on that left hand side.”

He is currently at Euro 2020 with North Macedonia and scored in his side’s loss to Ukraine on Thursday.
