Huddersfield Town’s big win in the summer transfer window undoubtedly came with holding off Leeds United interest in Lewis O’Brien.

Leeds’ pursuit of O’Brien was no secret after they failed to land a loan for Conor Gallagher at Chelsea. In the end, though, they couldn’t reach an agreement with Huddersfield for the midfielder, who remains a Terrier.

Phil Hodgkinson has revealed to Yorkshire Live that the biggest bid Huddersfield knocked back for O’Brien was totalling £13m including add-ons. It’s been widely reported since that the 22-year-old is in talks with the club over a new contract at the John Smith’s Stadium.

What’s the latest?

O’Brien’s current deal runs until the end of the 2021/22 campaign, with the club holding the option to extend that into a further 12 months.

However, Football League World are aware that talks between the club and player are well underway over a new agreement.

It’s been revealed to us that O’Brien is open to putting the Leeds saga behind him and committing longer term to Huddersfield, who will be offering a pay hike to match.

What of Leeds’ interest?

It remains to be seen whether Leeds revisit any deal to sign O’Brien at a later date.

Marcelo Bielsa ended the summer without his wish of a new central midfielder. Adam Forshaw’s return from two years on the sidelines has been suggested as a possible solution to that void, yet there’s a worry about placing too much pressure on him.

Leeds do have options in the form of Mateusz Klich, Stuart Dallas and Jamie Shackleton, as well as Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo Moreno, who play as No.10s within Bielsa’s system.

The overriding feeling, though, is that Leeds are a body short in midfield.

O’Brien’s name will no doubt continue to be linked. However, failure to agree a deal with Huddersfield in the summer, despite an attractive £13m package, suggests valuations are a way apart.

With a new deal in the pipeline, Huddersfield’s grip on the midfielder will only become stronger.
