Friday’s rest day had us desperate for football by Saturday and the World Cup did not disappoint.
Two games, 10 goals, welcome to the knockout rounds.
You missed Kylian Mbappé underlining his credentials as the one true heir to Messrs Messi and Ronaldo.
You missed the first 4-3 (after 90 minutes) in World Cup history.
You missed Benjamin Pavard score a goal of the tournament contender.
You missed Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez’s incredible double-act to send Uruguay into the quarter-finals.
You missed seeing Messi and Ronaldo knocked out, all but ending their dreams of ever winning the World Cup.
You missed the most goals on a single day of knockout World Cup football since the semi-finals in 1970.
What were you thinking?
Mbappé’s double. Argentina were dismal in the first half and easily could have lost by a few but rallied to somehow find themselves ahead shortly after the break.
Pelé’s take on the France game:
“Congratulations, Kylian Mbappé.
“Two goals in a World Cup so young puts you in great company!
“Good luck for your other games. Except against Brazil!”
If you’re going to miss the Ronaldo/Messi debate for the rest of the tournament you can always watch today’s Formula 1 Grand Prix: a few people go round and round in circles and ultimately it really doesn’t matter.
