Japan have impressed more than any other team at the World Cup so far and they strengthened their claim for a second title in their win over Norway in Wellington.

The Norwegians went into the tournament with an outside chance of winning it but they never got near Futoshi Ikeda’s side today, as they continue their march for a first World Cup win since 2011.

The Japanese were slick in attack, dominant on the ball and knew exactly what they were doing out of possession, looking completely comfortable in a game of such magnitude.

Hinata Miyazawa remains on track for the Golden Boot with five goals after bagging the third to round it off.

A statement victory from the best team in the tournament so far.

It was 4-1 and game over by half time with Spain flying through to the final eight.

Bonmati stepped up for her team when they needed it most.

Knockout football isn’t just about the elation – it’s also about the heartbreak.

2018 Ballon d’Or winner Ada Hegerberg came off the bench but couldn’t guide her country back into the game against Japan.

Her dream of winning the World Cup is over for now.

Anything else I should know?

Now it’s on to who is going to get who in the quarter-finals.

Keep an eye on USA v Sweden tomorrow, with the winner due to face Japan in what will likely be the tie of the round.
