In the final days of the summer transfer window, huge news shook the soccer world – PSG confirmed a loan deal with Inter’s Mauro Icardi. The striker has not only agreed on a loan move to Paris, but he’s also agreed a contract extension with his parent club.

Icardi’s future has been one of the top stories lately due to his clash with the Inter management. The club chairman Zhang Kangyang repeatedly expressed his wish to offload Icardi permanently, going against the Argentine’s wishes.

The feud between Icardi and the club escalated over the summer to the point when the player decided to sue the club for mobbing. For all these reasons, it’s an understatement to say that getting a new contract was a surprise.

New Inter Contract

The loan deal with PSG was only a part of a bigger contract between Icardi and Inter, which also included a contract extension. According to the deal, Icardi might stay put until 30 June 2022. But, there’s an important caveat in the contract – PSG have the option to buy Icardi’s contract at the end of his loan for about €70m.

In such a scenario, Icardi would get a €2m sign-up bonus from the French club, in addition to €8m he’s going to receive over the course of his loan spell. The thing about this clause is that it’s not a binding clause. PSG have no obligation to actually sign Icardi permanently next summer. Still, it seems that the Parisians will want to do so.

According to Transfermarkt, Icardi’s current value is over €80m, while just a year ago, it was 20 million more. And if he does well in the PSG jersey, the French side can say they’ve gotten themselves a fantastic deal.

Many sportsbooks that offer outright betting have made Icardi one of the favorites to be PSG’s top scorer at the end of the season. Furthermore, some books have also made him one of the contenders for the top scorer in this season’s Champions League. Speaking of which, if you want to bet on soccer from the USA you can use these offshore sportsbooks, many of which have such bets in the offer.

Doing well in PSG shirt would make him the number 1 transfer target for the French giant, but, it’s not just up to them. Icardi is the one who needs to agree to commit his future to PSG. And according to his wife/manager Wanda Nara, such a scenario does not seem very likely.

Wife Called Wanda

Mauro’s wife Wanda Nara is employed as his manager and according to her, Icardi is still very much in love with his parent club. The former Inter captain would like nothing better than staying in Milan. Or at least, stay somewhere in Italy. In a recent interview she gave for the Sun, Wanda said that the move to Paris was, by far, the worst option.

Although she did admit the move to PSG could be the right career path for her husband, she also stated that the option was far from good for her and the kids. As a result of Icardi’s move, the family will have to live between Paris and Milan, which is where the children go to school. As per her own words, she’s going to stay in Milan with the family, while Mauro is going to live alone in Paris.

Apart from the family issues, there’s another reason why Icardi doesn’t want to stay in France forever. Both he and his wife still keep on saying that Inter is his dream club. But, even if that’s true, his love for Inter seems to be unrequited.

Bad Times at San Siro

Although Icardi keeps on expressing his love for Inter Milan, the six years he’s spent in the club were full of controversies. One of the biggest troubles he’s gotten into was when his autobiography was released, which sparked a feud with Inter ultras. In the book, Icardi claimed he scared of some of the toughest Nerazzurri hooligans by threatening them with criminals from Argentina.

Icardi also got in a feud with the club management while Luciano Spalletti was the coach. His wife publicly criticized the manager, as well as made unfavorable comments about the Inter board of directors in relation to Icardi’s contract. As a result, the club decided to strip Icardi off the captaincy.

And the latest troubles started when Antonio Conte was appointed the Inter manager in the early summer. Conte publicly declared he has no plans with Icardi, subsequently taking away the number 9 shirt from the striker and giving it to the new signing, Romelu Lukaku. Upon Lukaku’s arrival, Icardi was given the shirt with the number 7 on the back, but once Alexis Sanchez joined the club, he lost that number as well.

After all the mind games between the club and the player, Icardi decided to file a legal case against Inter, demanding €1.5m in damages. The deal with PSG puts an end to the row, while also leaving all the options opened for the future of Icardi’s career. Although Inter currently think there’s no room for the Argentina striker, their stance could change depending on his performances at PSG. Hence the extension of his contract to 2022.

Is the Troublemaker Worth All the Fuss?

With so many controversies during his time at Inter Milan, the obvious question is why Inter haven’t offloaded him a long time ago. The answer is not just that he has always had strong contracts to back him; it’s also because his contribution to the team has always been great.

Considered to be one of the top finishers in the game, Icardi has proved his talent so many times in the past. He currently ranks as Inter’s eighth top goal-scorer ever. The striker was crowned the Capocannoniere (top scorer) of the Italian Serie A on two occasions. The first one was in the season 2017-18 (together with Ciro Immobile) and before that in the season 14-15 (together with Luca Toni).

And he’s still only 26! There’s no doubt that a bright future is ahead of him. The only question is where?
