Gianluigi Donnarumma’s career with Paris Saint-Germain appears to be over despite helping the Ligue 1 giants to their first ever Champions League trophy less than three months ago, but where does the 26-year-old turn next and what are the knock-on effects for the Italy national team?
Donnarumma has been shown the exit door at the Parc Des Princes, and has been unceremoniously left out of the travelling squad for the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham Hotspur in Udine on Wednesday night.
This comes after the signing of talented French goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who arrived in Paris at a cost of €40m, plus up to €15m in bonuses. Luis Enrique has reportedly decided that the former Lille stopper will be his no.1 moving forwards.

That leaves Donnarumma out of the picture heading into the final year of his contract, with just a few weeks of the summer transfer window left to go.
The former Milan graduate had been in talks to extend his contract with PSG, but was unable to come to an agreement with the club despite months of negotiations.
As a result, Donnarumma is left looking for a new club, but despite his obvious talents between the sticks, does not have an enormous list of options in front of him.

That is largely because no ‘big’ sides in Italy are currently in desperate need of a new goalkeeper. There have previously been rumours of a potential move to Inter, but that is unlikely to happen while Yann Sommer and Josep Martinez are both still on the Nerazzurri books.
There have also been rumours of a potential move to the Premier League, but Fabrizio Romano has since confirmed that Chelsea is not a concrete option for the Italy stopper.
There are still potential options in Manchester, as both United and City have reportedly expressed an interest, although there have been no formal offers lodged at this stage.
United could be tempted into replacing former Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana, who has come under criticism on numerous occasions after leaving Serie A.
Fabrizio Romano claims that City is also still an option, despite the fact that they still have Ederson and Stefan Ortega on their books, and have also brought in James Trafford this summer.

What is certain is that Gennaro Gattuso and the Italy national team will be hoping for a swift resolution, given that we are now less than a year out from the 2026 World Cup, a tournament for which the Azzurri have not yet qualified.
Donnarumma has been serving as captain of the Italy national team over the last year, but needs to be playing regularly at the highest level if he is to justify his inclusion as no.1, with the likes of Michele Di Gregorio, Guglielmo Vicario, Alex Meret and Marco Carnesecchi pushing for game time.
