We’ve seen a game for the ages in Amsterdam Thursday evening, as Ajax came out on top of Panathinaikos in a 17-round penalty shootout in Europa League qualifying.

After the two teams finished level on aggregate at 1-1, the tie was decided on penalties, and the shootout did not disappoint.

It took 17 rounds, but Ajax came out victorious by a staggering score of 13-12, the second-biggest penalty shootout score in European competition history after Gzira United and Glentoran saw their shootout finish 14-13 in July 2023.

To add to the drama, 40-year-old goalkeeper Remko Pasveer was in between the sticks for the Dutch giants, and not only did he make five saves, but he scored his attempt as well!

All in all, the shootout lasted nearly 25 minutes, and youngster Anton Gaaei eventually stepped up to slot home the winner to allow both sets of fans to finally breathe again.
