The Super Ballon d’Or is probably the rarest trophy in all of football and we can explain exactly what the award is and reveal past winners.
The Ballon d’Or Award is the world’s most prestigious individual sporting award. The award, created by France Football (owned by the L’Équipe Group), has been awarded since 1956.
The main awards, presented at an annual gala ceremony are the men’s and women’s Ballon d’Or for the best player over the previous year; the Kopa Trophy for the best young men’s player; Gerd Müller Trophy for the best striker, and the Yashin Trophy for the best male goalkeeper. There is also the Club of the Year Prize and Socrates Award.
Numerous phenomenal players over the years have scooped up this award. We have the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane and most recently Karim Benzema – who have all got their hands on the reputable award.
However, there is an award that is even more prestigious that the great Ballon d’Or – the Super Ballon d’Or. So what is it? Has anyone ever won it before? Find out everything you need to know right here at Give Me Sport.
The Super Ballon d’Or is the name of a former prize that was awarded on 24 December 1989, by the French football magazine France Football for the best football player of the last three decades.
So far, the award has only been given out once – making it possibly the rarest accolade a footballer can achieve. It is also disputed whether it will ever be handed out again, as the award needs to have someone that is deemed worthy.
So far, only one award has been handed out when former Real Madrid forward Alfredo di Stefano won the Super Ballon d’Or in December 1989.
He beat French legend Michel Platini and Dutch star Johan Cruyff to the title as France Football magazine marked its 30th anniversary.
There is only one real candidate for the next Super Ballon d’Or, and that is Lionel Messi. The Argentine has pretty much won everything there is to in world football, so this insanely prestigious award would be the icing on the cake for the little magician.
