On Monday night, the American businessman took to Twitter to reveal that contracts had been exchanged with the club administrators, Quantuma, and claim that he “will be the next owner of Derby County Football Club”.

The deal is conditional on a few final issues, including the ownership of the stadium, being sorted but Kirchner indicated he doesn’t anticipate any issues and also revealed that he would begin funding the club next week.

Quantuma confirmed the news on Tuesday morning, suggesting (via BBC Sport’s Simon Stone) that the exchange in contracts was “a very significant step towards the completion of the sale of the club”.

They added that the hope is for the takeover to be done before the end of May, with a deal for Pride Park looking likely to be the main obstacle at this point.

According to The Telegraph, a local businessman is in talks to buy the stadium and lease it to Kirchner, with negotiations said to be ongoing and promising.

The report also claims that the Rams’ prospective new owner has made handing manager Wayne Rooney a long-term contract a priority once the takeover is fully completed.
