AS Saint-Étienne lodged a late comeback against Girondins de Bordeaux in Ligue 2 on Saturday. Irvin Cardona scored an injury-time brace in a result that consolidated Les Verts’ second place in France’s second tier; Bordeaux, meanwhile, are stagnating in 14th. The club’s latest defeat reportedly elicited a violent reaction from manager Albert Riera.
BeIn Sports’ pitch-side reporter revealed that during an altercation in the tunnel post-match, former Liverpool player Riera, who was appointed as Bordeaux manager mid-season, slapped a Saint-Étienne player. The identity of the alleged victim of this slap, which was not been caught on camera, has not been revealed.
The alleged incident was a topic of conversation in the post-match press conference. Riera did not deny that the incident took place nor did he confirm it. “What happens on the pitch, stays on the pitch. What happens in Las Vegas, stays in Las Vegas,” said the Spaniard. His comments have certainly done little to ease the controversy or provide insight into the incident, which is shrowded in mystery.
