José Mourinho was so unhappy with Manchester United’s performance in Sunday’s defeat at Brighton that he barely said a word to his players in the dressing room after the game.

United were beaten 3-2 at the Amex Stadium in what has been called one of the club’s worst displays of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

And according to a report by The Times, Mourinho was so disappointed by his side’s powder puff performance that he was lost for words at full-time.

Red Devils executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward also entered the away dressing room after the defeat but his appearance was nothing out of the ordinary.

Mourinho is understood to have been left dismayed by the club’s inability to sign a new central defender during the summer and the Portuguese coach’s demeanour in a post-match interview given to beIN SPORTS has prompted rumours his days at Old Trafford could be numbered.

According to former United star Lee Sharpe – who made 193 appearances for the club – the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss hasn’t been saying much to his players before games recently either.

“Mourinho is on trial again,” Sharpe told talkSPORT.

“He’s never looked happy since he’s been at the club.

“There just seems to be no plan at Man United. Nobody seems to know where they should be going and what they should be doing.

“I’ve heard a little whisper to say the manager is not really giving them a lot of instruction before games. He’s just picking the team and letting them get on with it.

“It seems to me that he hasn’t got the players in that he wanted this summer, and he’s gone into a bit of a sulk. He’s just let the players crack on and do their own thing.

“When you’re moping around, moaning about who you haven’t been able to sign and about the lack of players you have, instead of bigging up the players you already have and filling them with confidence, I don’t think it’s good for team morale.”

Mourinho is currently the bookmakers’ favourite to be the first Premier League manager to be sacked and if he does, Sharpe believes Zinedine Zidane would be a perfect replacement.

“He’s played at the highest level, managed at the highest level and has been successful at both,” he said.

“He’s a big enough name who could cope with the pressure and the questions asked of managing a club of that size so I think he would be ideal.”
