Several Liverpool players were in action on Thursday night for their countries.
After Ryan Graverberch was omitted from the Netherlands squad, Liverpool fans turned their attention to Reds duo Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo, both started against Spain in their Nations League quarter-final first leg at Stadion Feijenoord.
Gakpo returned to the Liverpool squad recently after an injury lay-off and looked rusty in recent matches. Arne Slot started with Luis Diaz instead in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United, and Gakpo only made an appearance from the bench.
The Dutch winger started against Spain and scored the equaliser in the 28th minute, powering home a low shot from Bournemouth attacker Justin Kluivert’s pass.
The match ended in a 2-2 draw, but the £35m winger impressed heavily. Slot will be delighted to see him getting back on the scoring sheet again.
The Liverpool forward also played a brilliant pass to Memphis Depay, but Unai Simon saved his effort.
The newspaper wrote: “Kluivert served Cody Gakpo and the Liverpool player shot venomously into the near corner: 1-1.”
“At least as beautiful as the equalizer was Gakpo’s sublime pass to – besides Frenkie – the other ‘lost son’ Memphis Depay, who saw Unai Simon save his effort.”
Voetball International noted Gakpo once again “underlined his value” to the Dutch national team as he has been involved in 21 goals (15 goals and six assists) in 37 international matches.
Gakpo has been superb for Liverpool this season, scoring eight goals and providing three assists in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old attacker also scored eight goals and provided two assists in cup games, and proved his value to the side.
With nine more games left to play and a certain Premier League title to be won, Liverpool fans will want to see Gakpo return to his best form after the international break.
Slot will be praying that his played do not get injured during the international break.
