Chelsea still have a game left to play this season, but the Premier League campaign is over, and The Athletic have decided to publish their long feature about the campaign as a whole.
It’s full of interesting details as you’d expect about a fascinating campaign. It’s really focused on Enzo Maresca, an interesting character who is already incredibly divisive with Chelsea fans. It tracks the moments of glory and tension as the Blues’ season went from great to disaster – and then spun back just in time with 5 wins from 6 at the end of the season.

They quote sources inside the club in pointing to the two areas which he’s done better than Mauricio Pochettino did a year before, despite being far less experienced.
“Chelsea sources say Maresca is an improving head coach and can only get better,” they write.
“He had a better return than the more experienced Pochettino managed in the league last season, most notably getting six more points and conceding 20 fewer goals with the youngest ever average starting line-up in Premier League history.”
There is no doubt, things look very impressive from that perspective.
While it’s great to be back in the Champions League, and would be great to win the Conference League tomorrow night, we’ve been worried that our previously high standards may have fallen off a little. But according to those same source, that’s not the case:
“Chelsea sources insist no one is getting carried away. The goal is to lift the Premier League and Champions League trophies, not get overexcited over coming fourth. There is still a lot of room for improvement to get Chelsea back to being serial winners.”
