Oxford United fell to yet another League One loss at the weekend, meaning that they are continuing their slide closer and closer towards the relegation places in the third tier.

The club were competing for the play-off spots last time out but no wins in their last five outings has now seen them fall to 20th in the table – only above the drop zone on goal difference.

They faced off against Wycombe at the weekend and despite smashing in 29 shots and having an xG rate of nearly two goals, they couldn’t find the back of the net and it was the Chairboys who took home all three points in a 1-0 win. Now, Cameron Brannagan has spoken about the result to the Oxford Mail and told them he is ‘frustrated’ and could ‘put his head through a wall’ over the fixture.

1) What is the name of the club's stadium?

Kassam Stadium Valley Parade Fratton Park Bloomfield Road

The midfielder has been a wanted man himself in recent seasons due to his impressive performances for Oxford. Rather than head elsewhere in the summer window though – and potentially up a division to the Championship – he opted to stay with his current club and try and help them achieve a promotion.

So far though, it has backfired on the player and the side have headed in the other direction. Even with Brannagan playing in eleven games so far this campaign and firing in four goals, it hasn’t been enough to get many points on the board for his team. He also had a chance to fire his side into the game at the weekend but was unfortunate to miss a penalty.

Now, the 26-year-old has admitted he is frustrated but also added that he is eager to now put the game behind them and try and better themselves in their next fixture. Speaking about the result then, he said: “I feel like putting my head through the wall but that’s football and it is what it is. I’m annoyed at the penalty because I’m better than that, but the keeper dived the right way and saved it.

“I’m frustrated because I back myself as much as anybody else. Everyone’s hurting in the changing room, it’s frustrating, but what can we do? It’s done and we look forward to next Saturday.”

Cameron Brannagan might be playing in a team right now that are heading in the wrong direction but he can hold his own head up high and say he is doing his best to help Oxford out.

This year, the midfielder has been one of the club’s standout players and has been doing his utmost to try and turn things around for United. His goalscoring exploits – despite being a midfielder – have been superb and the 26-year-old was also arguably one of the better players on the field against Wycombe.

It was certainly just one of those days for the player and his team at the weekend. They absolutely pummelled the Wycombe goal and the xG tally suggests that Oxford should have won the game comfortably but football is a funny old spot and sometimes it just doesn’t work out the way it should.

The club though have proven they can create chances and dominate games – they just have to start making it count now too.
