“What an own goal it is from Celtic,” Ally “I want to know who these people are” McCoist

Rather undecided here whether it is worth posting Ally McCoist’s comments from this morning on TalkSport regarding Neil Lennon’s controversial ‘all guns blazing’ Media Conference from yesterday afternoon.

McCoist once whispered something rather unsavoury into Neil Lennon’s ear as the old Ibrox club was already on its own course to pending disaster, which ended in liquidation in 2012. McCoist was the Ibrox manager who sailed the old blue-nosed vessel as it sunk then jumped ship to take on the myth building at the off-the-shelf venture founded by the big handed speculator from Yorkshire. So McCoist knows that Lennon has a temper.

“It has just been a PR disaster. I can’t remember an own goal like that for a long time,” McCoist said, without the slightest hint of 2012 irony. “I won’t lie to you, I watched the press conference TWICE because it was incredible.

Maybe Lennon should have re-read this classic meltdown from McCoist, then the manager at Rangers FC ( in Administration) from April 2012 as reported by The Herald.

“I was shocked and absolutely appalled by the way this supposedly independent judicial panel was coming down on us in this form,” said the manager. “Who are these people? I want to know who these people are. I’m a Rangers supporter and the Rangers supporters and the Scottish public deserve to know who these people are, people who are working for the SFA,” McCoist ranted. “Make no mistake about it, this is an SFA decision. They have appointed the panel so therefore they are working for the SFA, but who are they? I think we have a right to know who is handing out this punishment to us, I really do. “Like everyone else involved – our team, our supporters, our staff and a lot of neutrals – I am staggered at the severity of the punishment. This decision could kill our football club, simple as that. Make no mistake about it. This panel is not totally to blame for the death of our football club if it happens but this particular decision could kill our football club,” he added. “You would hope there would be sympathetic ears within the SFA over an appeals process, but you just don’t know what is coming next. It is complete and utter guesswork. In terms of our supporters, again they have received another kicking and we just feel it’s time to start fighting back. You can guarantee we will be fighting back.”

So McCoist has form himself when it comes to these rants and his was altogether more sinister actually calling for names to be named of the folk on the Judicial Panel (even though he knew the names). Here’s what he’s been saying about Neil Lennon’s Media Conference rant from yesterday on TalkSport.

“It’s just been a PR disaster,” McCoist stated this morning on the radio station’s ‘Breakfast’. “I honestly can’t remember an own goal like it in Scottish football for a long time.

“I’ve seen the whole interview from Neil, and I can’t agree with Neil… it sounds as though his chief executive Peter Lawwell can’t agree with Neil. Peter Lawwell came out and apologised, and then Neil has come out and said something completely different.

“Andy Walker and I did the Rangers vs Celtic game, the final whistle blew and I turned to Andy Walker and said, ‘I cannot believe they are jumping on a plane in an hour and a half to fly to Dubai’, and he shook his head and said, ‘neither can I. Even then, we knew this had the potential to be a disaster, and it has been, make no mistake.

“You think of Celtic going for ten-in-a-row this year, the signings they’ve made, the signings they haven’t made in terms of Fraser Forster or re-signing Craig Gordon, then going to Dubai and shooting themselves in the foot, it’s just been an unmitigated disaster for them.

AND THIS WAS THEIR SISTER PAPER OVER THE WEEKEND…

“The majority, the vast majority of the public up there think Celtic got it absolutely wrong. In many ways they’re trying to hide behind ‘we didn’t do anything legally wrong’, but I really don’t care if that’s the case, the fact is they shouldn’t have gone, that’s the bottom line.

“They’ve said they haven’t done anything wrong, but you think of some of the supporters who have been furloughed, who can’t see their families and they’re seeing their boys sit at a pool having a beer.

“I know they haven’t done anything ‘wrong’, but it’s not a good look. It’s a terrible image at the very least. What an own goal it is from Celtic, it’s absolutely remarkable.”
