New West Bromwich Albion boss Valerien Ismael is targeting a move for Barnsley captain Alex Mowatt, which has drawn an excited response from fans of the West Midlands club.

Albion announced yesterday that Ismael had become their new head coach, with reports suggesting they paid Barnsley £2 million to prize him away from them after less than 12 months in charge.

Tykes supporters may be sick of the sight of the Baggies but it seems they’re not done yet as, according to The Athletic, they’re now set to make a move for Mowatt.

The Barnsley skipper is out of contract this summer but the Oakwell outfit have offered him new terms.

They’re not the only ones keen, with multiple Championship sides said to be interested but it is understood that West Brom are now the frontrunners to sign the 26-year-old.

The midfielder joined Barnsley from Leeds United in January 2017 but has become a key figure in the past three seasons – missing just four league games as he’s helped the Tykes win promotion to League One, avoid relegation in dramatic circumstances in 2019/20, and then make the play-offs last term.

Mowatt has established himself as one of the most impressive all-action central midfielders in the second tier in recent years – offering tenacity defensively, controlling games for his side, and adding 11 goals and 15 assists in the past two seasons.

Did each of these 20 midfielders ever score a goal for West Brom?
