Curtis Jones delivered a standout performance for England in their UEFA Nations League clash against Greece, marking another milestone in his burgeoning career. The Liverpool midfielder played a pivotal role in the Three Lions’ 3-0 victory, showcasing his immense potential as he scored on his senior debut and claimed the Man-of-the-Match award. Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, a long-time admirer of Jones, wasted no time in praising the young star’s exploits.
Jones’s journey to the England senior squad has been far from straightforward. The Liverpool academy graduate began the season sidelined with a muscle injury that restricted his involvement during the campaign’s opening weeks. Yet, since regaining full fitness, he has demonstrated why Liverpool manager Arne Slot continues to place faith in him.

Having started six of Liverpool’s last seven matches, Jones has been a beacon of consistency, delivering polished performances in midfield. His call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad was a natural progression after excelling with England’s junior teams. Against Greece, he played as one of the two deepest-lying midfielders, dictating the tempo and breaking up opposition play with assuredness.
His goal on debut placed him in the history books, becoming the first Liverpool player to achieve such a feat since Samuel Lee in 1981.
Steven Gerrard, who coached Jones during his formative years at Liverpool’s academy, took to social media to commend the 23-year-old’s display. Writing on Instagram, he exclaimed: “What a player. Fine the FA and all the coaches for being late.”
The former Liverpool captain has never been shy in his admiration for Jones, frequently highlighting the midfielder’s potential to become a key figure for both club and country. Speaking about Jones recently, Gerrard remarked: “I’ve been a huge fan of Curtis for a very long time. This needs to be Curtis’ time. He’s coming into the prime years from an age point of view. He’s got a real strong profile as a midfielder… extremely fit and robust.”
However, Gerrard also emphasised the importance of mental resilience, noting: “It’s about the mental side of it now… resetting yourself every couple of days to perform at that level.”
The past few weeks have been transformative for Jones. Off the pitch, he recently became a father, adding a personal milestone to a career already brimming with promise. On it, he has seized the opportunity to cement his place as a regular for Liverpool under Arne Slot.
With his England debut, Jones demonstrated that he belongs at the highest level. His composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and eye for goal underline the qualities that Liverpool fans and Gerrard have long admired.
Looking forward, Jones will aim to build on his success with England as they prepare to face the Republic of Ireland. For Liverpool, his continued development could be pivotal as the club seeks to reclaim domestic and European glory under Slot’s leadership.
For Steven Gerrard, Jones’s rise is a source of pride, validating the belief he’s always had in the midfielder. The bond between the two remains strong, with Gerrard’s mentorship during Jones’s academy days forming the foundation of a career that seems destined for greatness.
