There was a huge twist in the Barclays Women’s Super League’s title race on Sunday afternoon as Gareth Taylor’s Manchester City defeated reigning champions Chelsea 2-0 at The Academy Stadium.

The victory was Manchester City’s first over Chelsea in 11 attempts in the league, a run that goes back four years. The Blues looked to be huge title favourites before the match, but the table looks an awful lot more competitive now.

When speaking in the post-match press conference, Manchester City boss Taylor was delighted with his side’s performance, although he still believes that Chelsea are in the driving seat.

“Overall, I’m really pleased with the three points,” Taylor said. “It’s still Chelsea’s title to lose if you look at it that way, but it’s a real positive step for us and gives us great confidence going into this next period.

“I felt that we limited them to half-attempts. We were the team that were on the front-foot and I think it was a case of really hammering that home, sticking with Chelsea to the point the game starts to become ours and they are going to have to do a lot to take it back from us.”

The win extends Manchester City’s unbeaten run in the Barclays Women’s Super League to 14 games, making them the in-form team in the division, a far cry from where they began the campaign. Taylor is pleased with where his side currently are, however, he sees plenty of battles to come.

“To get to a position where we are after losing the first two away games of the season is pretty remarkable,” Taylor said. “We’ve not done anything yet, we’ve still got some really important games to come, six games left. There are a lot of challenges coming up, so we’ve got to go into it with high levels of confidence.”

Manchester City secured the three points in-front of a sell-out crowd at The Academy Stadium. The home fans certainly made their presence felt during the match. Some fans wondered whether it was a missed opportunity not to have the game at the club’s main stadium like many other fixtures over the weekend, but Taylor was pleased to be at The City Football Academy.

He said “We love playing here, this is our stadium. I think it was a fantastic crowd today, over 5,000. It was two teams going for it, but well-respected by the audience and that’s why for us, this is our home.”

Manchester City still have the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United to play away from home and Taylor knows that there is plenty of drama left in the season yet.

“The fact that we’re playing Arsenal next week, the fact that we play United after the break, the fact that Chelsea play Arsenal, there’s still going to be twists and turns,” Taylor said. “Particularly, when those teams are playing each other, they’re going to be big games. You’ve seen today the shift that can happen sometimes, for and against.”

Manchester City’s next Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Arsenal kicks-off at 12.30pm on Sunday afternoon.
