TEGAN BOWIE (she’s on the wing)…performed her first media duties at the Celtic FC Women press conference yesterday afternoon ahead of the SWPL1 home match on Sunday at the Penny Cars Stadium in Airdrie against Spartans. Kick-off is 1pm and a win will see Celtic go to the top of the league for the first time this season. Tegan signed her first professional contract at Celtic in the summer and has been in outstanding form this season for Fran Alonso’s exciting side.

The Celtic Star and the Cynic asked the questions and Tegan performed admirably.  “Against Spartans, they’re quite tough defensively, but with the form we’re in I think we’ll do quite well, especially on the big pitch,” the Celtic winger said.

Bowie told us that  that getting out of set-pieces was one of the squad’s aims going into last week’s match against Hamilton Accies, when out of the six goals scored, two came from corner-kicks. Something of an incredible revelation that one. You can practice corners and as a result score two goals! Maybe the Ghirls should have a word with the Bhoys! .

The 18-year-old revealed that Celtic Women’s manager, Fran Alonso was pleased with their performance against Hamilton and use of set pieces, with defenders Caitlin Hayes and Cheyenne Shorts both getting on the score sheet in these planned set-plays.

On the squad rotation that Fran Alonso has favoured this season Tegan states that this has helped create  a very competitive atmosphere within the group. “You have to be on form all the time because someone could just come in and nick your spot,” Tegan said. “It just pushes you to be better every day.”

The former Hibernian player, added: “The new shape helps me a lot. I can attack more and support the play. That’s what I like to do just run around all day. I try and do that as much as possible and hopefully get more assists along the way.”

On signing her first professional contract in the summer,  the 18 year old said: “It gives me a lot of confidence that Fran thinks I can be here for the future. I’m just looking to improve and keep upping my game over time, she added.

“I’m just enjoying it at the minute, and I’m learning from my team-mates which is really important.”

Celtic have had two six nil wins on the bounce but both fan media sites taking part in yesterday media conference   highlighted the need to be more clinical with chances with so many missed on Sunday against Hamilton, when the scoreline could easily have doubled. Both title rivals theRangers and Glasgow City – who play each other on Sunday – have outscored Celtic so far this season and with the league very tight at the top goal difference could be a deciding factor.

“We’ve got players that can come on to the field and score from different areas – midfielders, defenders, attackers,” Tegan said. “It’s good because it’s not just always our strikers like Charlie scoring, who is in tremendous form right now.”

CHARLIE WELLINGS (She’s doing her thing)…

Charlie Wellings celebrates her hat trick following her sides 6-0 win during the Scottish Women’s Premier League 1 match between Celtic Women and Partick Thistle Women at Penny Cars Stadium, Airdrie, Scotland on 3 October 2021.

We’ve got Charlie, she’s doing her thing…and that’s scoring goals eleven so far this season in ten starts since joining Celtic from Bristol City in the summer. Charlie’s loving live at Celtic, she describes it as not just a club but a way of life in this interview with Celtic TV earlier in the week.

“Everyone knows how big Celtic is as a club, from the outside you’ve always heard about the fans and how much it means to everyone and it’s not just a football club. It’s a lifestyle,” Charlie said. Player of the Season in the making this Ghirl…

FRAN ALONSO – Fran is the leader…

Fran is the leader…A huge amount of credit for the rapid development of the Celtic FC Women’s team into the professional era is due to the leader, Fran Alonso. We’ve covered some of the stuff Fran was saying at yesterday’s media conference, attended by The Celtic Star and The Cynic, in this article from last night, see below.

Fran, much as we tried to lead him astray, spent much of yesterday’s Media Conference emphasising the need to concentrate on the task at hand against Spartans with the Celtic players being in no doubt about the need to secure the three points. What happens next will take care of itself.

“It’s very important, and that’s why we always go game by game,” Fran insisted.  “We are not thinking about the league, we are only thinking about the three points.

“Our mission is the three points and Spartans have a very strong team, they’ve got experienced players, very aggressive in midfield, they are good in the air and very good in the counter-attack as well. So, we know their strengths and we will try to minimise their strengths, but they also have weaknesses and we will try to exploit that, but, for sure, we will not underestimate them.

“They are a good team, they have maybe not had the best of starts. Last year they started good, this year not so well, but they will still be a tough team. A huge score such as 9-0, that’s not realistic and they will be looking to make up for the lack of points they have, so, for sure, they will fight, and they will not be underestimated.”

Why not try and get along to support the Ghirls this Sunday at the Penny Cars Stadium – 1pm kick-off.
