Oxford United winger Josh Murphy has been key to his side's League One top-six push this campaign, and has reached double figures in goal contributions.

Lately, the former Norwich and Cardiff man has been on inspired form for the U's, as he bagged a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win over Burton Albion on Saturday 6th April, a feat he would go on to repeat a week later in a resounding 5-0 victory over play-off rivals Peterborough.

Should the Oxfordshire outfit secure a play-off spot, Murphy will have played a big role in their success, but his contract at the Kassam Stadium is due to expire at the end of the campaign.

According to the Hull Daily Mail, Hull City have sent scouts to monitor the 29-year-old, who is due to be available on a free transfer this summer.

Hull fan pundit reacts to Murphy transfer speculation

Football League World's Tigers fan pundit, Ant Northgraves said: "It's an interesting link, though I would be surprised if it was genuine.

"I think we try and favour, younger, up-and-coming talent as opposed to someone who is 29, who would be in their prime, and I think a player of Murphy's ability would be wanting to go somewhere to play consistently.

"Given our wingers, at the minute, I can't see him being a first-choice player, I think he would be a squad player and someone at his stage of his career would be wanting to move up a level to a side and hopefully play every week.

"So, if he was happy with being a squad option, I think I would definitely be okay taking him, but I doubt that that's where his intentions would be.

"Given we've got Jaden Philogene, Jason Lokilo to come back from loan, then you've got some other players that we may be linked with, but I'd be surprised if this was true."

Tigers face competition for Murphy

Should the Tigers pursue their interest in the wideman, they will face competition from fellow Championship sides West Brom, Queens Park Rangers,Southampton and Sunderland, while Major League Soccer outfit Minnesota United have also been credited with interest in the ace.

Liam Rosenior's Tigers side are already strong in the winger department, so Murphy would likely be a squad player if he arrived at the MKM Stadium, even if they remain in the second tier.

Clubs like the Baggies and the Saints, meanwhile, are set to compete in this season's Championship play-offs, and if they earn promotion to the Premier League, it would be unlikely to see them making a swoop for Murphy.

Perhaps out of the sides who are reportedly interested in the U's man, QPR would be the most ideal destination for Murphy should Marti Cifuentes' side avoid relegation, as they could be looking to bolster their squad in order to have a more comfortable 2024/25 campaign.
