Dino Toppmöller, Kevin Trapp and Rasmus Kristensen want to “wrap things up against St. Pauli” next weekend after drawing 1-1 in Mainz.
Head coach Dino Toppmöller: “We managed to get off to a really good start and subsequently took the lead, but Mainz grew into the game after that and played well. The draw is a fair result. We’ve definitely qualified for Europe, which is a good achievement with two games left to play. Now we want to take the final step against St. Pauli.”
Kevin Trapp: “The game swung back and forth with a lot of runs and challenges. We knew it was going to be like this. We did well to keep them at bay, but in the second half in particular we didn’t really contribute much at the other end and focused more on defending. We did okay in the first half. There’s a lot to criticise, but we’re at the end of a long season and have gained an important point going into next week. It would have been nice to confirm [our place in the Champions League] in Mainz, but now we can do so in front of our own fans next Sunday evening. That’s our big objective.”
Rasmus Kristensen: “We’re not happy. We have to be honest – we know we didn’t put in our best performance, which is why a point was maybe the most we could have hoped for. In games like these, it’s important to stay alert at all times because of all the long balls. That’s how we ended up scoring our goal. Thanks in part to our win over Leipzig, we’re still in a position where a point is enough to make sure everything remains in our hands. We’re ready for the challenge and want to wrap things up against St. Pauli.”
