Liverpool centre-back Rhys Williams has revealed that Thiago Alcantara has had his teammates telling him to shoot more this season.

Thiago finally got off the mark for Liverpool at the weekend as he brilliantly curled in a shot against Southampton in the 90th minute. The strike sealed the three points for the Reds as they beat Southampton 2-0, with Thiago cutting in on his right foot and bending the ball past the goalkeeper from the edge of the box.

Williams has claimed Thiago’s finishing on the training pitch has been excellent and added that Gini Wijnaldum screamed at Thiago to shoot when he got the ball just outside of Southampton’s penalty area.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Williams reacted to the goal. “Well, we’ve been telling him to shoot more!

“His shooting in training is top. I think Gini shouted ‘Shoot!’ and he must have heard him because he’s whipped it round and finally got one for us.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Thiago is by no means a prolific goalscorer, but a player with the quality he possesses should be able to score a couple of goals a season. In his seven seasons for Bayern in the Bundesliga, Thiago only failed to score two or more league goals once. This shows that he has been able to chip in with goals throughout his career and that may be why his teammates have been telling him to take on more shots.

It has not been an easy first season in England for Thiago. Not only has he had to deal with settling into life in England during a pandemic, but he has also had to deal with injuries. The Spaniard missed 17 games during the middle portion of the campaign due to a knee injury, disrupting his start to life at Anfield and meaning that it has taken him longer to find his rhythm.

Hopefully, Thiago can continue to impress in the final few games and then go and have a great tournament for Spain at the European Championships. If he can do that, then he could have a great chance to come back to Liverpool next season and show exactly what he is capable of in midfield. Thiago could be a huge asset to Liverpool’s midfield if he can stay fit for the majority of next season and find some form, as his passing and ability to dictate the flow of a game is superb.
