According to Het Nieuwsblad, Westerlo have held talks with Elfsborg head coach Jimmy Thelin. The 45-year-old has been head coach of the Swedish Allsvenskan side since 2018, with a contract running until 2025. After finishing 12th in their first season under Thelin, the side have finished second twice, including during the 2023 season. The side won the most games in a single season under Thelin this past season with 20, scoring 59 goals and conceding 26.

Unfortunately, Elfsborg missed out on the title to Malmö FF on goal difference. Westerlo will be bucking a historical trend if they appoint Thelin, having opted for Dutch or Belgian head coaches. Another name on the list is Club Brugge coach Rik De Mil. After Scott Parker was sacked by Club Brugge De Mil took temporary charge of the side. At the end of the season he decided to remain as part of the staff under new head coach Ronny Deila.
