West Ham v Manchester City preview: City hoping to finish the season strong

As the 20/21 WSL season finally draws to a close West Ham will host Manchester City. The two sides will meet twice within 7 days as West Ham make the return journey next Sunday in the FA cup.

When the two sides met at the CFA in January, Gareth Taylor’s side comfortably claimed all 3 points in a 4-0 victory. A win for the sky blues could clinch them the title if Reading can overcome Emma Hayes’ Chelsea side. A win for West Ham would see them move into 8th place depending on the result at Tottenham’s game against Birmingham.

Injury concerns

West ham have not announced any new injury concerns following their goalless draw with Aston Villa last Sunday. Manchester City confirmed that Chloe Kelly suffered an ACL injury during their 4-0 victory over Birmingham. Speaking in the pre-match press conference Gareth Taylor said that Kelly would be undergoing surgery “fairly imminently”. It is expected that captain Steph Houghton will not be available for the game as she recovers from an Achilles injury.

Ones to watch

West Ham– Emily van Egmond has been on excellent recent scoring form. The No.25 has scored 5 goals in the past 8 games across all competitions. The midfielder scored 4 during the hammers 11-0 resounding victory over Chichester in the FA cup.

The Australian international has scored 4 of West Ham’s 21 WSL goals this season. Her talent in the midfield has not gone unnoticed either. Her work has been crucial, particularly in helping the Hammers ensure their league survival.

Manchester City– Alex Greenwood has made a noticeable impact since signing from Lyon during the summer. The No.27 has slotted into the Sky Blues back line seamlessly despite fairly consistent rotation by manager Gareth Taylor.

Greenwood has proven herself to have been a wise signing alongside fellow former Lyon teammate Lucy Bronze. The duo made the move to Manchester amongst a flurry of star name signings including the US world cup winning duo in Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle.

Whilst Greenwood has not received the recognition of other new signings such as Mewis or Chloe Kelly, who joined the club from Everton, her work in the defence has not gone unnoticed as Manchester City hold one of the best defences across the league.

Where to watch

The match will kick off at 2:30pm at the Chigwell Construction Stadium. All the action will be shown on BT Sport 2 Extra and will also be shown live on the FA player in the UK.
