João Palhinha seemed to have taken a decisive step in his career by moving to Bayern Munich, but the scenario in Germany did not unfold as he had hoped. After a season full of doubts and without the desired consistency, the Portuguese midfielder could return to the Premier League as soon as this summer.

While Bayern are weighing up what to do with his future, two clubs have already expressed an interest in repatriating him: Fulham, where he shone before leaving, and West Ham United, who are looking to rebuild their squad after a disappointing season. Graham Potter wants to bring the 29-year-old midfielder.

As reported by Graeme Bailey via TBR Football, Potter has already asked the club to fight for the 29-year-old midfielder. His intention is clear: to bolster a midfield that needs solidity, reading and mettle.

Last season left too many things to consider at West Ham, both in terms of the quality play and results. Although the team has found some stability in recent months, the demands are greater.

The English manager, who previously managed Brighton and Chelsea, wants to surround himself with players who can execute his ideas without hesitation. Palhinha fits that profile, and his knowledge of English football can make a difference.

Opinion:

But should West Ham be shelling out more than £47m for a 29-year-old? The figure is high, especially considering the structural needs of the team. However, Palhinha is more than a physical pivot. He is a midfielder who interprets the rhythms of the game well, who knows when to get back and when to attack.

In a dressing room where there has been a lack of clear quality profiles in central midfield, his arrival could represent tactical stability and leadership in that area of the pitch. The Bayern midfielder’s time at Fulham showed he has the level to compete week in, week out in England, and that is worth more than any inexperienced promise.

The other big question is whether to beat Fulham or explore younger options. If the project is medium to long term, it might make sense to look at another profile. However, if Potter wants immediate results, Palhinha is a safe bet.

Besides, having him since pre-season would allow him to establish his role and build the system around him. West Ham need character and continuity, and Palhinha, though expensive, offers both. Sometimes, paying the right price for proven experience ends up being the wisest decision.
